Vestfold - county of culture
By Flemming Hofmann Tveitan

For visitors, Vestfold county is perhaps best known for its summer activities. Not without reason, but the area is actually very vital and lively all year round and has a rich cultural life.

Summer, sun, seaside, bathing, festivals and summer shows. For many, it is the very quintessence of what used to be called Vestfold county, but which today has been merged with Telemark and is called Vestfold Telemark county.

The coast of Vestfold is fabulous and the county can boast a number of signature festivals, such as Stavernfestivalen, Slottsfjell, Kanalrock, Vervenfestivalen and Fjordfesten. There are also a number of stages and concert organizers here. Foynhagen in Tønsberg and Kurbadhagen in Sandefjord as two clear examples.

But of course it doesn't end with sun, summer and festivals. Throughout the year you can pick and choose from a cultural goody bag. Both Larvik, Sandefjord and Tønsberg have beautiful and modern cultural centers, which offer a good mix of professional expressions and contributions from local actors. Nor should the churches be forgotten as contributors to cultural life, and the very extensive Church Festival Days in Sandefjord each autumn are a good example of this.

In Vestfold, there are also several art associations, a number of galleries and furthermore a variety of stages, both small and big, which house theaters, revues and concerts.

Well-developed infrastructure, small distances between the cities, short distance to Oslo and a growing population signify that the cultural life in the Vestfold cities is constantly being blessed with cultural treats. Visit Vestfold always has a good overview of what is happening.
